Chinese New Year Paper Lanterns [FREEBIE!]

by

The Year of the Ox started last Friday and we are still celebrating Chinese New Year! Did you know it’s a traditionally a two-week celebration and officially a one-week holiday overseas?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so holi-fused (holiday-confused) with the crazy mashup last weekend (Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day)! And let’s not forget it was Mardi Gras earlier this week too)! Whew!

But if you wanted to continue celebrating the Lunar New Year, I wanted to share with you this easy DIY papercraft project. The step-by-step tutorial can be found here on the CutCardStock blog (I was a blog contributor in 2019/2020). On that page, I provided my .studio3 cut file but I realize some Cricut users may want in on the papercrafting fun too! So, the button below is a link to the SVG file that can be opened with both Silhouette and Cricut software.

This is a fun and safe craft to make with kids and a great way to introduce other cultures and traditions! You can make a whole day out of celebrating Asian culture with Chinese takeout or if you’re feeling adventurous, make your own dumplings! It’s really not hard and it’s one of my kids’ favorite thing to do! Last summer, I took my kids “around the world” for our summer school at home and we visited Taiwan where my family is from. Check out the blog post if you need more fun and educational ideas!

新年快樂 (pronounced Xīn nián kuài lè)! Happy New Year everyone! 🧨🐂🧧🥟
