One of my favorite projects is making custom doormats. I’ve made one for my son’s camping-themed birthday party, another one with the words “be kind” and a bright rainbow, and one for Christmas with a faux buffalo plaid background. I figured it was time to make another and with Independence Day around the corner, a red-white-and-blue doormat is a great one to add to the bunch. I kept the design free of text so that I can have it out on any of the patriotic holidays or just because.
Follow along the tutorial below to see how easy it is to make yourself one for your home!
Supply list:
- Silhouette CAMEO (link)
- Blank coir doormat (I like the ones from Target)
- Freezer paper (link)
- Outdoor acrylic paint (color of your choice, I used Craft Smart’s in Red, White and Bahama Blue)
- Bristle paint brush
- Weeding tool (link)
- Long pins such as corsage pins (link)
- Iron
- Scotchgard Rug & Carpet Protector (link)
- Stars and Stripes Border SVG file
Step 1:
Download the Stars and Stripes cut file and import the file into your Silhouette Library.
Step 2:
In Silhouette Studio, set up your design space to be 10in wide and 18in tall. Center the design to the page.
Step 3:
Rip out freezer paper sheet that is 10in wide (my freezer paper is already 18in tall). This will be your stencil. Secure it to the cutting mat and send your project to cut with your cutting machine. With my Silhouette, my cut settings were: Blade 2, Speed 3, and Force 10. I suggest doing a test cut in the corner to make sure your blade cuts through the freezer paper.
Step 4:
Use the weeding tool to remove the unwanted pieces.
Step 5:
Set the cutout freezer paper over where you’d like it on the doormat. Secure it with long pins, as many as you need to keep most of it down.
Step 6:
With the iron on warm and your pins still in place, press down on the freezer paper to help it stick to the doormat. Press down for 10 seconds at a time. The stencil should lightly stick to the tips of the coir. You may need to remove some of the pins to iron. Put the pins the back in after the paper is ironed. Once you’ve finished ironing, your stencil is ready for painting.
Step 7:
Using a straight up-down motion, paint the stars and stripes. Do NOT paint in a side-to-side motion. I recommend painting two coats for better color coverage. I also recommend using a thinner brush to get into difficult spaces. Try to get as much paint into the deep crevices of the coir doormat.
Step 8:
Once you have finished stenciling, remove pins and freezer paper to reveal your final painted design.
Step 9:
Spray with rug protectant spray to help weatherproof your doormat.
