I remember loving Valentine’s Day as a little kid. Not so much in high school when it became a bit of popularity contest with candy grams. Anyone else had that at their schools? I wonder if that’s still a thing…

I digress…back to cuter Valentine’s Day stuff! I prefer non-candy Valentine’s so it was a no brainer when I saw this pencil set from Michaels. It says 48 pieces but don’t be fooled, it’s really only 24 pencils PLUS 24 erasers. Obviously, you’re going to give the erasers WITH the pencils so this set is perfect if your child’s class has 24 classmates or less.

Now I just needed an exchange card to go with it. There are quite a lot of options on Pinterest but of course a maker is gonna make! So I whipped up this fun printable that functions as an exchange card AND a little game. Yes, I’m a sucker for multi-functionality! 🤓

My 2nd grader is getting into all sorts of puzzles nowadays so I am hoping his buddies will think this is fun too.

This printable features 3 secret codes, one per page. Give it a shot, see if you can decode it!

Here are some tips on how to assemble the Valentine goodies!

  1. Print as many pages you need. I recommend printing at 90%. This shrinks the file down a little so that you can trim each card to look “full bleed”.
  2. With a paper cutter or scissors, trim each printable.
  3. Have your child sign at the bottom of each card.
  4. With an x-acto knife and cutting mat, cut along the light grey lines (above “SHHHH!!” and below the code). Thread the pencil through. And done!

Happy decoding! 🔍
