Be Our Ghost Front Door Decoration

I get giddy this time of year because my favorite holiday is coming up! Each year, one of our family’s tradition is decorating our front door, which unfortunately is on the side of the house so only Amazon delivery peeps and random door-to-door solicitors see it. But it still doesn’t stop us from having fun!

This tradition started back in 2017 when we transformed our front door to Frankenstein. Then, we had fun with a giant spider in 2018. The following year, we added a skeleton with a broken wrist in honor of my son’s monkey bar injury. In 2020, we wanted to come up with something funny and relevant since it was such a loooooong year and so, we created Ghoul School!

For this year’s design, the initial plan was to have a bunch of little haunted houses but you know, less is more sometimes! This crafter mama knows her limits! Ha!

I came across this perfect haunted house design (Design ID#94526) on the Silhouette Design Store. Other designs used are:

  • Bat (Design ID# 92570)
  • Ghost (Design ID# 97473)
  • Spiderweb (Design ID# 213004)
  • Cat on stacked pumpkins (Design ID# 277018)

While less is more, I also wanted to take this year’s design up a notch by adding lights! I’m so glad this idea in my head actually worked! I created two 3D windows and a front door so that I could put a battery-operated tealight inside. The best part is the tealights have a built-in timer so they will automatically turn on at the same time each night and stay on for six hours. Here’s the link of the tealights if you’re interested! And if you want to know more about these 3D pieces, I’ll be putting together a little tutorial in a separate post in the next week or so because I just thought of another way to use the 3D elements in another project that I’m pretty sure you’ll love and want to do in your home! Stay tuned!

If you’re looking for a fun and easy craft project to do with the kids, consider decorating your front door! Here is a list of the common supplies we use when we create our door designs:

  • Pacon Fadeless Paper Roll (cheapest at Michaels especially with a coupon or for unique colors, check out Amazon)
  • Scissors
  • Silhouette CAMEO (link) or Cricut
  • Cutting Mat
  • Colored cardstock
  • Tape runner adhesive double-sided tape (link)
  • Papercrafting glue (link)

The hardest part is getting your paper roll flat on your door because of the doorknob. I wish there was an easier way but I have just eyeballed where to cut. Generally I start with a small hole and then eyeball where I should cut so that the cutout just fits the door hardware. But if I overcut and it exposes the wooden part of my front door, I just tape a piece of extra paper behind the cut. From a distance, you really can’t tell! Have fun crafting!
