Do you ever get an idea in your head and you just keep coming back to it day after day after day? This project was one of those (crazy) ideas. Woven wall hangings are incredibly popular right now and can be found in stores like West Elm, CB2, and Urban Outfitters. Prior to my idea, I thought about making one myself because that’s what crazy DIYers think and do. But before I traded my paper skillz for yarn skillz (which is totally non-existent), this idea of making a faux woven wall hanging out of paper popped into my head. I do like a crafting challenge and boy, did this particular project challenge me!
Selecting the materials was not difficult as I knew the colors I wanted to use. The hardest part was the amount of time it took to cleanly (as much as I could) execute the hanging…this project took about two weeks. Now, keep in mind, I’m not a full-time crafter (I have these creatures called kids) so maybe someone could complete this faster. Plus, it was my first time doing any sort of weaving so I took my time trying different type of weaves to create different looks. Because paper is not as flexible or soft as yarn, not all loom weaves worked. Nevertheless, I was pretty impressed to see what skinny strips of paper can do! My favorite parts are the pops of shimmer from the gold paper and the fringe at the bottom of the hanging!
Just in case anyone was wondering what materials were used:
- Recollections Linen 12inx12in Cardstock from Michaels in Mid Blue, Natural, and an aqua color (official product name unknown)
- Recollecetions Metallic 12inx12in Cardstock from Michaels in King Gold
- Crochet Cotton Thread from Michaels
- Cardboard cut out from a free USPS mailing box
- Wooden Dowel (trimmed)
Supplies used:
- Paper slicer (recommend for making the skinny strips of paper)
- Scissors (to trim excess pieces)
- Tweezers
- Craft glue
Now that I have gotten that crazy idea out of my head and into physical form, I think I’m good for awhile before wanting to start another weaving! Ha! That or it’ll be some other new trend that will peak my interest! 🙂
