What craft stores do you like to shop at? Michaels is literally down the street from me. Joann’s is a bit of a drive north so I don’t frequent that store much unless I need fabric. And then there’s Hobby Lobby…to me, it’s like Michaels, Joann’s, Party City, and Home Goods combined. Thank goodness this store is the furthest away from my house because I could see myself living there 24/7.

So, whenever I go, I usually spend about two hours walking up and down every aisle. You’ll usually find me drooling over the fun selection of scrapbook paper and working real hard to not #buyallthethings! But then on a recent trip to Hobby Lobby, my eyes saw this adorable patterned paper featuring cutely illustrated houses and it somehow landed in my shopping basket and came home with me. How on earth did that happen? 😉

For this “new home” card, I used several Silhouette Design Store designs:

You might recognize the floral wreath from the Word of the Year project I made earlier this year. I love how well each of the floral elements mesh together yet each design was created by a different Silhouette Artist. Incredible, right? Like as if they were meant to go together. Friends…THIS! This is why I am doing the Silhouette Design Store Mashup series to show you to play around with the designs, use your imagination, and create your masterpiece!

Speaking of Silhouette Artists, I have two to introduce to y’all today! Aki of Lilium Pixel SVG and I were on Silhouette’s Design Team last year and I am just in love with all her beautiful designs. Her lettering is flowy, fun, and positive! Katie of Furrow & Feather creates some of the most realistic 3D designs that can be easily turned into home decor projects. Yes, you heard right…DIY projects you actually want to hang up and display! So fun reading their Q&A responses and getting to know them a little more…check them out below!

I’d love to share the unique features of this card to hopefully inspire and/or educate you in your crafting journey.

  • Create Your Own Shape – Believe it or not, the house cutout was totally DIY’d within Silhouette Studio by welding three shapes: a square, a triangle on top (for roof), and a tiny rectangle (for chimney). The weld function is in the “Modify” panel. After making the desired house shape, I centered it in the middle of my card and sent it to Silhouette to make the opening in the face of the card. Then, I created an offset (with sharp corners) to make the light pink house cutout to “frame” the opening. The framing helped define the opening, thus making it feel more intentional and prominent. The light pink cardstock color was chosen to match the house illustrations and brought cohesion to the card’s color palette.
  • Vellum – Treat this versatile material like regular paper. I printed Lilium Pixel’s SVG design and cut it slightly larger than the house-shaped opening. Next, I adhered it to the inside of the card with scrapbooking adhesive tape. I think the opacity from the vellum paper also helps “soften” the card’s appearance.
  • Create with Dimension – Even though this card will probably not be mailed (unless I put it in a box mailer), the art of layering to create dimension will take your papercrafts up a notch! Most of time, I create dimension using foam adhesives but none were used on this project. Instead, the petals of the ivory flowers were curled (with the end of a popsicle stick) and layered to create a 3D effect. I love how a flat material like paper can be transformed into something dimensional and almost realistic!

This is one of my favorite cards I’ve made to date. Now…just gotta see who’s moving to town so I can give them this card! 😀
