In preschool, my son was introduced to a wonderful book that we still read and reference today. It’s called “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” (affiliate link) and it teaches the concept of kindness in an easy-to-understand way for young children. Essentially, everyone has an invisible bucket and the things you do/say can either fill or dip that bucket as well as your own bucket. And just a few weeks ago, his school participated in The Great Kindness Challenge, which makes me grateful that he’s learning new, different, age-appropriate ways to be kind. 💖

So! In the spirit of kindness, I created our own Valentine’s exchange cards to give to his classroom buddies.

Yes, it’s more work than buying a $4 pre-made pack from Target but I am hoping it will be more meaningful. It’s an opportunity for him to pause (his mind/body runs at 500mph!), think about each classmate, and write down a character he loves about him/her! I love learning more about his friends. As for practicality, it’s a great way for my son to practice penmanship! #nerdymom 🙈

With Valentine’s Day less than a week away, this is a great weekend parent-child activity that can be easily done with minimal supplies!

Supplies needed:

  • FREE Printable (click here to download)
  • Color Printer
  • White Cardstock (link)
  • Scissors or Paper Slicer (link)
  • Marker or Pen
  • Treat or Non-Treat (optional)
  • Washi tape

Simply, download this FREEBIE printable and print at home or at your local print store. I had mine printed at OfficeDepot on their cardstock (110lb) for less than $3 total for six sheets (24 exchange cards). Next, cut along grey lines and have your kiddo write down a couple words to describe each classmate.

If you want, you can add a treat or a non-treat (temporary tattoos, stickers, fun party favor type of toys) and use a cute patterned/colored washi tape to stick it on the card.

I can’t wait for Ethan to see the fruits of his (writing) labor when his friends’ faces light up after reading their Valentine’s exchange card! 😊
